GREENWOOD, MS – The above photo was featured in several news stories in relation to the reports of the hanging of Frederick Jermaine Carter, Friday, Dec. 3. Many of these news outlets, however, have now – as of Dec. 7 – removed the photo from their websites. The reason(s) are unknown at this time, whether some news directors believe the photo has been doctored or there are questions as to the source of it and who the man in the blue gloves is.
Leflore County Coronor Debra Sanders, told The Black House’s Adeeba Folami in a phone interview, that she finds it odd that anyone would take a photo of such a terrible scene and then share it with others. She went on to say that last week, she and two of her deputies arrived at the scene and found Carter’s body still on the tree, where it had been for at least 24 hours. She was unaware of anyone at that time taking photographs.
After the body had been transported to a facility, she performed a physical exam and continues to stick by her conclusion there were no signs of a struggle or fight. She explained that at the hanging scene, her crew found a frame-like, or make shift, table that appears to have been used by Carter to stand on and secure the noose around his neck and then to kick it to the side, which would have resulted in his hanging.
When asked if she was being pressured to come forth with such a ruling or if it was obvious to her that it was a suicide hanging, she replied that, in her estimation, it was obvious the 26 year old had taken his own life.
The local NAACP office maintains that something is not right about the hanging which, they suggest is a modern day lynching. Either way, it’s a tragedy and loss of another young, Black life.
