Unraveled Yarn: A Lesson About Disunity

November 21, 2010 No Comments

In the Holy Qur’an, Chapter 16 (entitled “The Bee”), verse 92 reads:

And be not like her who unravels her yarn, disintegrating it into pieces, after she has spun it strongly. You make your oaths to be means of deceit between you because (one) nation is more numerous than (another) nation. Allah only tries you by this. And He will certainly make clear to you on the day of resurrection that wherein you differed.

This is from the Maulana Muhammad Ali translation which adds this footnote regarding the first sentence which mentions the unraveling of yarn:

“A man who accepts the truth but does not act according to it is likened  to a woman who first spins her yarn and then unravels it. This is sheer madness, but this is the very thing of which most people are guilty. They are united by certain ties, but when this union brings about strength, they destroy it with their own hands. It was unity which made the Muslims rise to great power, but that unity today lies in ruins, and the strong community of Islam is like the unravelled yarn of a crazy spinner.”

Do you agree that this type of crazy behavior is “the very thing of which most people are guilty”? It certainly seems to  be in effect when it comes to the dis-unity of Black people. How much does the “hidden hand” have to do with this crazy behavior, i.e., this lack of unity that continues to this day amongst “us” collectively.

A more scary thought. How many times have you and I been guilty of symbolically unravelling the yarn, or unity, of a project? How much of that unravelling had to do with the broken “oaths” spoken of in the verse? Do we make our word bond or do we make promises and commitments to people regularly and then fail to keep them.

Do you agree that such behavior only leads to disunity which stems from hurt feelings, disappointment and other people not being able to trust us because they know they cannot rely on us and our word for anything?
