LESSON

“Never settle for less than you know you deserve to have in a mate”

I loved you too much, it seems
Now I’m left wond’ring
what did it all mean
What lessons did life
want me to learn
as my world turned
upside down
like a soap opera drama
that revolved back around to
me, myself, and I
the return of peace of mind
without you,
alone again

Yes, I survived
after another episode
in which I denied
myself for YOU,
but no true friend
would ever require that,
something I already knew
but had to be retaught through you,
the latest lesson life’s living textbook
brought to me

Now I’m left pond’ring
the depths of my soul
the deepest recesses of my mind
seeking reasons why I
had to repeat the lesson
I’d already been taught, but
failed to learn well enough
to keep from being caught up
in a dangerous trap
an emotionally unhealthy cycle
of “love” that, in the end,
turned out not to be real
and not to be
refreshment to my mind, body or soul
Yes, you were the latest lesson of love
life sent my way
in my never-ending journey
to become WHOLE
