Living in an American Hell

Should Blacks Separate or Continue to Sizzle?

by Adeeba Folami

America is often touted as the best or most civilized country in the world, the place some other nations are said to hate because of U.S. freedoms, but if there were any place on earth which would fit the description of hell, what other country would be at the top of the list? If America is the best the world has to offer, what does that say about the condition of the rest of the nations? Why are millions plagued with various addictions in order to escape the reality they know in American society? Why are thousands committing, or attempting, suicide on a daily basis? Statistics from Mental Health America show that suicide is the 8th leading cause of death in the U.S. with 30,000 people killing themselves every year and 500,000 attempting to end their lives. But why, if America is so great, are some so willing to give up the most precious gift they have in order to escape what their lives have become in America? Some would cite the eagerness of citizens from Cuba, Russia, Haiti or other countries to defect or relocate to America as some sign of this country’s greatness but are the numbers wanting to come here greater than the 500,000 per year which try to escape via suicide?

Many have become numb to brutal murders committed all over the country; the many other crimes which occur daily; the obsession with sex that is evident on all levels, and the ever expanding prison industrial complex which disproportionately affects Blacks and has put America in first place as the world’s incarceration capital. Children and babies are raped, molested, beaten and abused everyday. Is that heaven or hell?

Despite the freedoms offered in America – even though Blacks do not share them equally – this is still the most decadent society on the planet. Regardless of the positives we can cite about living in America, do they outweigh the wickedness, corruption, vice, and inequality also found? If not, is there any hope of reform when some would say the degree of lasciviousness far exceeds that of Sodom, Gomorrah or ancient Rome? If those great nations and empires fell primarily because of immorality and base levels of living, what do we imagine is in store for America? If the country is going the way of its dollar (which now is only worth twenty-something cents) – the outlook is not good, so why are many still hanging on to what sounds like the worst kind of hell?

Elijah Muhammad spoke decades ago of the “Fall of America” and encouraged the Black masses to “unite and do something for self,” and also heavily emphasized the need for separation, a concept Minister Louis Farrakhan has made mention of in many of his addresses this year even recently stating how “anxious” he is to defend the Black cause (and the call for separation) before Congress.

In light of America’s steady – and undeniable – decline, are we as Blacks doomed to go down as well, or is there a way to escape the hell that daily affects each one of us to one degree or another? Are we content to be found rushing to the top levels of a sinking Titanic instead of bailing and, while there remains some value on the emasculated dollar, more seriously contemplating the possibility of Elijah Muhammad’s words as found in the Muslim Program:

“We want our people in America whose parents or grandparents were descendants from slaves, to be allowed to establish a separate state or territory of their own – either on this continent or elsewhere.  We believe that our former slave masters are obligated to provide such land and that the area must be fertile and  minerally rich.  We believe that our former slave masters are obligated to maintain and supply our needs in this separate territory for the next 20-25 years – until we are able to produce and supply our own needs.  Since we cannot get along with them in peace and equality, after giving them 400 years of our sweat and blood and receiving in return some of the worst treatment human beings have ever experienced, we believe our contributions to this land and the suffering forced upon us by white America, justifies our demand for complete separation in a state or territory of our own.”
